Abstract

In 1882 Arturo Soria y Mata first presented his idea for the city of the future: the Ciudad Lineal. Construction began to the east of Madrid on arid land. In order to transform the landscape from rural to urban and from deserted to prosperous, it was essential to connect the area to Madrid’s water infrastructure. Despite its early successes, the Ciudad Lineal was destroyed by the demands of the economic boom. The heritage that disappeared can now be enhanced through dissemination.
