In this section the case of cracking due to loading is examined, as it is the most frequent case, and a mathematical modelling, named a general model, is proposed for the calculation of the maximum crack width in service conditions taking into account the influence of the primary and internal cracks on the cracking behaviour. This model is based on the slip-theory. On the basis of the main results obtained with the general model, some improvements are suggested for the calculation methods proposed by fib Model Code 2020 as well as Eurocode 2 concerning the average value of the bond stress and the mean deformation. A simplified calculation method is therefore also proposed that is in very good agreement with the general model. Moreover, the effect of the concrete cover is included into the modelling of the cracking behaviour, upgrading both general and simplified models in a combined slip- and no-slip theory. Finally, the theoretical results of crack spacing and crack width obtained with the combined theory for the general model and the simplified method are compared with the experimental data obtained from an extensive research on RC ties and beams.
