Italian urban regeneration has never been planned as a coherent urban policy; instead, it has been influenced by a number of national-specific elements. This paper addresses and describes its changes over time, with an emphasis on the relationship with the European Union, institutional and national tendencies, and global dynamics. Italian urban regeneration has been a fragmented and sporadic intervention since its start at the end of the 1980s, with a major focus on the physical dimension. Each stage of urban regeneration development is explored, highlighting any constraints, barriers, and initiating factors. Urban regeneration is still a topic of discussion and efforts in Italy, despite its ups and downs, demonstrating its importance and significance at the urban scale. The current Italian situation offers a critical window of chances for experimenting with novel forms of urban regeneration.

Abstract
The current Italian situation offers a critical window of chances for experimenting with novel forms of urban regeneration.Pubblicazioni consigliate
