The issue of finding an appropriate use for abandoned religious heritage is increasingly urgent, however, it could become a development opportunity through the reuse, recovery, restoration, and regeneration of “wasted” resources from the perspective of the circular economy. A specific reflection is proposed through two case studies: one related to the reuse of large former convents abandoned in the city of Salerno, and the other related to a state property undergoing alienation in the city of Capua. The main objective of the “circular” adaptive reuse projects was to implement a participatory co-design process supported by multi-criteria and multi-dimensional evaluation tools, identifying new uses able to restore social vitality and centrality to these places.
