In this article we discuss how the school factory model that has inspired the design of learning spaces and processes for over two centuries can be overcome thanks to smart people-centred learning ecosystems, in which the smartness of the places is associated with a framework that aims at the achievement of the well-being of the student and, more generally, of all the players involved in the educational process and in which the learning by being-inspired learning processes have as their ultimate goal the harmonious formation of the personality of the students, future proactive members of the society. In this framework the IC technologies play an important role for the development of the e-maturity of the learning ecosystems and the development of an individual and collective digital literacy seen as a factor capable of amplifying the competence-based learning and the learning how to be. The overall picture suggests the need to overcome, from the architectural point of view, the factory-model of schools with implications both on the design of new physical and digital spaces and for the renovation of existing learning spaces throughout intervention inspired also by the principle that define the phygital spaces.
