Abstract

The vineyard landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato in Piedmont consist of a selection of five distinction winegrowing areas and a caste, whose names evoke profound and ancient expertise in the relationship between man and his environment». The introductory summary of the criteria chosen for the inscription in the UNESCO World Heritage List of the vineyard landscape of Piedmont well conveys not only the main ideas of the same criteria, but, above all, it underlines the relationship between man and environment to obtain a sustainable landscape. The six core zones, then so-called components, of the piedmontese vineyard landscape – the Langa of Barolo, Grinzane Cavour Castle, Hills of Barbaresco, Nizza Monferrato e Barbera, Canelli e Asti Spumante, the Monferrato of Infernot – become tools to analyse in time, in addition to the landscape, the specific decrees issued to protect properties, underlining the exceptional interest of the area. The succession of the decrees could be read to study the different approach towards cultural heritage, since the legislative provisions of the early twentieth century to the law of 1st June 1939 n. 1089, Tutela delle cose di interesse artistico e storico, to the D. Lgs. 29th October 1999 n. 490, Testo unico delle disposizioni legislative in materia di beni culturali e ambientali, to the D. Lgs. 22nd January 2004 n. 42 Codice dei beni culturali e del paesaggio. Analysing the phases of the research presented in the Executive summary (2013), the essay studies the sequence, in chronological order, of the so-called note ministeriali written at the beginning of the twenties century and the decrees written over the century. Considering before the first territorial limit and then the final ones of the research, it examines in depth each property protected by a specific decree or by operation of law. Castles, palaces, churches, chapels, cellars dialogue themselves not only because of a special relationship, going beyond municipal limits, but in a relationship decided by cultural heritage protection policy too, in just over a century. Applying a method belonged to the history of architecture discipline, this approach writes an unpublished history of legislations, confirming the exceptional value of the vineyard piedmontese landscape.
