ITS for Transport Planning and Policy

This chapter introduces and frames ITS technologies for transport planning and policies, and reports on the definitions, main components and the most relevant applications. Fixed and mobile sensors are illustrated, as is the possibility of integrating data obtained from them together with those collected through a diffused crowdsourcing of information. The present and future of automated passenger counting, of traffic observing and of single vehicle monitoring are described. Finally, a summary of driver assistance and road safety technologies is given.
