Since its rediscovery in 1771, the Villa of Diomedes has represented one of the most famous and most visited Pompeian domus, especially for its characteristic distribution on several floors and for its position in the Vesuvian landscape. The finding, during the excavations, of more than twenty skeletons has contributed to its fame and arouses the curiosity of artists, writers and scholars. This essay retraces the impact the Villa has had on the vast iconographic and literary production, inspiring, for instance, a famous novella by Théophile Gautier and becoming the object of the attention and study of architects such as Le Corbusier and Roberto Pane.

Abstract
Since its rediscovery in 1771, the Villa of Diomedes has represented one of the most famous and most visited Pompeian domus, especially for its characteristic distribution on several floors and for its position in the Vesuvian landscape. The finding, during the excavations, of more than twenty skeletons has contributed to its fame and arouses the curiosity of artists, writers and scholars. This essay retraces the impact the Villa has had on the vast iconographic and literary production, inspiring, for instance, a famous novella by Théophile Gautier and becoming the object of the attention and study of architects such as Le Corbusier and Roberto Pane.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
