This research aims to bring in-depth analysis, through the use of BIM modeling, on the rigorous and systematic treatment of vaulted systems in the Architettura Civile by Guarino Guarini. The extensive speech on this topic, articulated by the architect in three different works, finds inside the Architettura Civile (published posthumously in 1737) an unprecedented classification of the vaults through the identification of individual elements made up of geometric primitives. The text and the accompanying plates of chapter XXVI of the treatise will be analyzed according to a study approach already started (Spallone, Vitali 2017), transferring the geometric knowledge obtained through the analysis in CAD system to a BIM modeling application. The transition to this type of practice includes elements of classical modeling but the not yet achieved optimization of BIM software in historical architectures, which doesn't allow a unique modeling strategy. The digital vault models will focus on the geometric genesis of the masses which, starting from the Guarini “six round bodies”, will allow to create empties with which identify the intradossal surfaces of these shapes. These techniques will be applied to the case studies proposed by Guarini, with the aim of obtaining reference models parameterized from a geometric point of view. The construction of the shapes developed by the architect will serve as a basis for approaching, with the same relationship of scalar ‘difficulty’, the architectures realized – and in the case surveyed – of the Turin Baroque panorama that ideally followed those concepts.
