This paper aims to investigate the traces of memory left by a temporary event on the urban surface in Beijing. In particular it will focus on the big and small transformations produced during the last decade by the Beijing Design Week in the district of Dashilar. Within this frame, the chapter tests the importance of matching an ethnographic work – made of fieldwork, photographies, drawings and interviews – with other kinds of sources such as catalogues and the Dashilar online platform, in order to understand and reconstruct at the different scales the articulated palimpsest of short and long-term effects due to the temporary event.

Abstract

This paper aims to investigate the traces of memory left by a temporary event on the urban surface in Beijing. In particular it will focus on the big and small transformations produced during the last decade by the Beijing Design Week in the district of Dashilar. Within this frame, the chapter tests the importance of matching an ethnographic work – made of fieldwork, photographies, drawings and interviews – with other kinds of sources such as catalogues and the Dashilar online platform, in order to understand and reconstruct at the different scales the articulated palimpsest of short and long-term effects due to the temporary event.
