Background, il progetto del vuoto

In a particular historical moment in which traditional models of urban design come into tension with temporary and fragile forms of transformation, this book presents the fruits of research that attempt to remove the urban project from the immediacy of its final result and, at the same time, to place it within the complex phenomena of cities. Background thus makes constant reference to the urban horizon of the city understood precisely as a background - what Aldo Rossi called a "fixed scene" - and thus recounts above all the project of the urban void, conceived not as an absence but as a completely available open field, a necessary support and condition for accommodating free forms of appropriation of space. The projects selected here and described through the voices of the authors themselves-Bernardo Secchi and Paola Viganò in Antwerp, Assemble in Liverpool, Atelier Bow-Wow in Tokyo, Raumlabor in Berlin, tvk in Paris, Janette Sadik-Khan in New York, Bas Smets in Brussels, Urban-Think Tank in Caracas-are examples of how the architecture of the void can react with the multiple intelligences, cultures, histories, and global behaviors of the "hyper-present." The writing of this book is the result of research work conducted by Nicola Russi, who is joined and supported by Alessandro Benetti, who co-authored the texts on pages 53, 107, 139, and 203 (Liverpool, Tokyo, Paris, Brussels). Background fa dunque riferimento costante all’orizzonte urbano della città intesa appunto come uno sfondo – quello che Aldo Rossi chiamava «scena fissa» –, e racconta così soprattutto il progetto del vuoto urbano, pensato non come assenza, bensì come campo aperto completamente disponibile, supporto e condizione necessaria per accogliere libere forme di appropriazione dello spazio. I progetti qui selezionati e descritti attraverso la voce degli stessi autori: Bernardo Secchi e Paola Viganò ad Anversa, Assemble a Liverpool, Atelier Bow-Wow a Tokyo, Raumlabor a Berlino, tvk a Parigi, Janette Sadik-Khan a New York, Bas Smets a Bruxelles, Urban-Think Tank a Caracas sono esempi di come l’architettura del vuoto possa reagire con le molteplici intelligenze, culture, storie e comportamenti globali dell’«iperpresente». La redazione di questo libro è frutto di un lavoro di ricerca condotto da Nicola Russi, affiancato e supportato da Alessandro Benetti che è coautore dei testi a pagina 53, 107, 139, 203 (Liverpool, Tokyo, Parigi, Bruxelles). La postfazione è a cura di Matteo Robiglio. Il libro è stato riconosciuto come un prodotto valutato ECCELLENTE dalla VQR 2015-2019.
