Perché sostenibilità ? Why sustainability ?

Far beyond the apocalyptic perspective of global warming, a sustainable approach to the environment and to the city demands a radical change although it appears obvious today. Increasing inequality and conflict represent the opposite of sustainability that requires intergenerationality, a universal approach and the ability to observe and measure the complex phenomena triggered by the Anthropocene. The chapter deals with these issues, as they are an essential premise for truly sustainable design projects. Indeed, ethical as well as scientific issues are deeply rooted in architecture. Designing the environment is the architect’s duty, an environment of which he/she is a part and is immersed in, liaising with the Other-than-self, the One for whom he/she designs. In this way ethics and aesthetics can be related.
