Computing and communications systems have found application in a great deal of fields, including, among others, energy and transport infrastructures, health, security, environmental monitoring and control, as well as people’s safety and entertainment. Thus, they are influencing every aspect of our society and daily life activity, with Internet-of-Things (IoT) representing a relevant case of such technology pervasiveness. Furthermore, the novel paradigms introduced by the network virtualization and the new generation of communication technologies, have emerged as real game changers, bringing revolutionary ideas and opening unexplored research lines. Examples include flexible system architectures and service realizations based on software-defined networking and network function virtualization, and mmwave communications. These are indeed highly vibrant times, full of research and technical opportunities.
