As part of a collection of writings dedicated to the relationship of architecture with the public realm and the press, the essay offers a handy visual vademecum on English architectural cartoons in the long Nineteenth century. Starting from some of William Hogarth’s humorous engravings, throughout the prolific production of English cartoonist George Cruikshank, the unpublished sketches drawn by satirical illustrator George Augustus Sala targeting the 1851 Great London Exhibition, and Punch’s contribution to the polemical assessment of the ongoing suburbanization of the English landscape, the essay uncovers a fundamental, yet still under-explored, chapter of architectural criticism.
