The book presents the “Chinese garden” as an historic garden type from the perspective of contemporary landscape architecture. After a typological description, an overview of the historical evolution of garden design in China, an analysis of the spatial framework and design methods of the Chinese garden as well as a study of the compositional elements, the book offers a reading of the relation between the classical Chinese garden and contemporary landscape architecture in China. Analysing the different ways in which traditional compositional principles have informed contemporary open space design in China, the book discusses the role of history in contemporary landscape architecture.
