Recovering the processing history of an image or a video is an important task in multimedia forensics, which can reveal details of the image or video life cycle, as well as provide clues on its authenticity. In this chapter, we will describe the most useful traces used for image and video processing history recovery, and we will show how such traces can lead to the recovery of several parameters characterizing the processing history. Due to the ubiquitous diffusion of compressed images and videos, the most important traces we discuss are those relying on the encoding process. However, editing operations that are commonly applied to both images and video, like resizing and color enhancement, are treated as well. Two interesting case studies, showing possible applications of processing history recovery to tamper detection, are finally described.

Abstract
Recovering the processing history of an image or a video is an important task in multimedia forensics, which can reveal details of the image or video life cycle, as well as provide clues on its authenticity. In this chapter, we will describe the most useful traces used for image and video processing history recovery, and we will show how such traces can lead to the recovery of several parameters characterizing the processing history. Due to the ubiquitous diffusion of compressed images and videos, the most important traces we discuss are those relying on the encoding process. However, editing operations that are commonly applied to both images and video, like resizing and color enhancement, are treated as well. Two interesting case studies, showing possible applications of processing history recovery to tamper detection, are finally described.Pubblicazioni consigliate
