La Sinagoga di Carmagnola, parole, immagini, oggetti e architetture delle Sinagoghe piemontesi

Nel volume sono raccolti e ampliati i materiali della mostra ospitata nella settecentesca Sinagoga di Carmagnola, Sinagoga oggetto di restauro da parte degli stessi autori. Il restauro, descritto con immagini e testi, ha restituito la sala di preghiera alla sua condizione originale ed ha trasformato il piano terreno in sede di una esposizione permanente sulle sinagoghe piemontesi. Nella prima parte del libro sono pubblicati tre brevi saggi introduttivi, che trattano del rapporto tra la configurazione dello spazio sinagogale e la cultura, la religione e la storia degli Ebrei; tra questi, Intenzioni a firma di Franco Lattes, riflette su come l’architettura delle sinagoghe e il suo trasformarsi nel corso della tormentata storia delle pellegrinazioni ebraiche, suggerisca un diverso, più labile e frammentario concetto di monumentalità. Nella seconda parte, il materiale esposto nella mostra viene tradotto in forma editoriale, e le 11 sinagohe ancora presenti in Piemonte sono documentate attraverso disegni architettonici e immagini fotografiche degli edifici, degli ambienti interni, di alcuni oggetti di culto e del rapporto con il tessuto urbano al contorno. Un’occasione per riflettere, a partire dall'architettura, sul significato di un patrimonio ebraico ricco e diffuso e sulle motivazioni che conducono alla sua conservazione. Nella terza parte del libro, la sfaccettata molteplicità dello spazio sinagogale è sottolineata metaforicamente dalle immagini scattate da tre fotografi, che hanno interpretato dal loro particolare punto di vista i soggetti loro affidati, suggerendo tre diversi sguardi su tre diverse sinagoghe, e confermando in questo modo come in quegli ambienti e in quegli arredi sia custodita la ricchezza e la complessità implicite nel concetto di differenza. The volume collects and integrates the material exhibited in the eighteenth century Synagogue in Carmagnola; Synagogue that has been totally restored by the same authors of the book; the restoration, that is illustrated by photos and text, has brought back the prayer hall to its original characters and has converted the ground floor to house a permanent exibition on Synagogues in Piedmont. In the first part of the book, are published three short introductory essays that reflect upon the connections that intertwine together the architectural characters of the Synagogues with Jewish culture, religion and history. Among them, Franco Lattes in Intentions, reflects on how the architecture of the synagogues, following in forms and language the anguished pilgrimage of the Jews along time and space, suggests a different paradigm of monumentality, unsettled and fragmental. In the second part is transposed in form of book the documentary material present in the exibition: with architectural drawings, images of the interior and of the urban fabric, texts and artifacts, are portraied the different identities of the 11 Synagogues that nowadays are still existing in Piedmont. It is an occasion to reflect, beginning with architecture, on the significance of jewish heritage and the reasons supporting its conservation. In the third part of the book, the multi-faceted meaning of the space of synagogues is metaphorically depicted by three photographers, that have interpreted their subjects from their own particular point of wiew, suggesting three totally different glances on three different synagogues, thus fostering the idea that in those architectures is preserved the richness implicit in the concept of difference and complexity.
