Edited special issue. The message of this special issue is that about southern member states of the European Union (EU) there is an, albeit hidden, success story to be told. The story is about innovation in governance in the wake of European spatial planning programmes. This issues recounts the evolving debate on European spatial planning. It shows the perspectives from the various corners of Europe at work in this debate, only to home in on the added value of the southern experience that has so far received little attention. It ends by reflecting on spatial planning as an experimental field for European governance.
