The paper analyzes the 3D blade design problem from the fluid dynamics point of view. The design problem is solved imposing either flow variables, i.e. blade forces, distribution either a geometrical parametrization of lean and sweep along the blade span. The related blade geometry is then obtained by solving an inverse problem for the camber surface. Optimal distributions of blade lean and sweep are investigated by means of an adjoint optimization procedure.
