The Case of the Q(5) Raman Line of Carbon Monoxide and its Fitted q-Gaussian Function
Sparavigna, Amelia Carolina
Sparavigna, Amelia Carolina
In an article by Thibault et al., 2002, we can find measurements of Raman linewidths in the Q branch of carbon monoxide, for mixtures with Argon at different temperatures. A plot is available for the Q(5) line with a fitted Voigt function. Here we show that a q-Gaussian Tsallis function can be used for fitting this line too. We will note that the fitted q-Gaussian has the wings which are not Lorentzian. At the same time, the wings are not Gaussian. Besides the use of q-Gaussians, a discussion will be proposed about the time correlation functions related to different line shapes (q-Gaussian, Egelstaff-Schofield, Kubo, BWF, Voigt, speed-dependent Voigt, Galatry, Rautian, HTP). Some of these line shapes have
been proposed for the high-resolution spectroscopy of gases; however, their knowledge can be relevant also for the condensed matter spectroscopy.

L'ARCA SBARCA A SALUZZO
Daniele Regis
Regis, Daniele

Poster
Background, Motivation and Objective:
There is a need to improve the usability of models and tools for the release, fate and exposure assessment of nanoforms (NF) and nano-enabled products (NEPs) throughout the life cycle and for these considerations to be taken into account at an early stage of the innovation process for SbD. Within the EU Horizon 2020 SAbyNA project, we have distilled elements from identified exposure tools and models for occupational, consumer and environmental exposure and identified potential improvements for these tools and models to serve for SbD purposes. Work is ongoing on improving exposure tools and models for SbD with a focus on the GUIDEnano tool tailoring to the needs of stakeholders, particularly SMEs.
Statement of Contribution/Methods:
This assessment has been split into two parts: 1) Environmental release and fate tools and models and 2) Human exposure models and tools. The tools and models to be assessed were first selected using defined criteria (such as inhalation exposure in occupational settings and consumers, dermal exposure, qualitative/quantitative models for human exposure and “ready to use” and nano-specific for environmental exposure). For those tools and models, which met the criteria (17 for environmental release and fate and eleven for human exposure), key elements of these were distilled (i.e. such as expertise required, assumptions, input parameters, inter-user variability, algorithms and uncertainty analysis). Following this distillation process, a shortlist of tools and models for further consideration for SbD has been compiled.
Results/Discussion:
Seven environmental exposure models and three release and grouping models were shortlisted after distillation. It was concluded that none of the shortlisted models were ideally suited for SbD purposes, with GUIDEnano the most promising. A number of aspects have been highlighted for environmental exposure models including improving model accessibility, creating theoretical scenarios for geographical considerations for SbD, improving run times of models, the scope for including default parameters and uncertainty and sensitivity analysis which is generally lacking. The provision of release rates to environmental exposure models is a key driver of uncertainty, which, in the absence of more detailed release data, can be helped by the use of Specific Environmental Release Categories (SPERCs).
For human exposure, nine models and tools were shortlisted after distillation. As for the case for environmental exposure, GUIDEnano is the most promising tool for SbD. Aspects highlighted from the analysis for the tools and models include potential improvements in model assumptions, input parameters (such as identifying minimum parameters required), inter-user variability (which was observed) and improvements to uncertainty analysis. For uncertainty evaluation, further work has been undertaken on the Precautionary Matrix with a flowchart and a Standard Operating Procedure produced for uncertainty analysis in human exposure models.
The current focus of our work is on improving the aspects identified (i.e. assumptions, input parameters, algorithms and uncertainty) of the environmental fate and human exposure modules of GUIDEnano, to be used for SbD purposes. An update of this work will be presented, including the development of user-friendly pre-defined activities that can be used independently or as a cascade of activity for paints and 3D printing.

Rule-based Out-Of-Distribution Detection

Out-of-distribution detection is one of the most critical issue in the
deployment of machine learning. The data analyst must assure that data in
operation should be compliant with the training phase as well as understand if
the environment has changed in a way that autonomous decisions would not be
safe anymore. The method of the paper is based on eXplainable Artificial
Intelligence (XAI); it takes into account different metrics to identify any
resemblance between in-distribution and out of, as seen by the XAI model. The
approach is non-parametric and distributional assumption free. The validation
over complex scenarios (predictive maintenance, vehicle platooning, covert
channels in cybersecurity) corroborates both precision in detection and
evaluation of training-operation conditions proximity. Results are available
via open source and open data at the following link:

Multiphysical model to assess the temperature and state-of-charge dependence of the OCV of a LIB cell
GARDELLI LUIGI
PAPURELLO DAVIDE
Gardelli, Luigi
Papurello, Davide
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have shown rapid growth in both the stationary and vehicle electric storage sectors. This is due to their high energy density, low weight, low memory effect, and low maintenance requirements. The performance of LIBs is greatly influenced by the temperature of the
environment and the cell itself. At extreme temperatures, whether cold or hot, phenomena are triggered that damage the capacity and durability of the battery and can lead to the riskiest cases to the cell exploding. In recent years, many researchers have investigated these issues to find solutions that could make batteries more efficient and safer in these operating conditions by improving the battery management system (BMS). The OCV open circuit voltage) behaviour of LFP batteries at different states of charge (SOC), placed in a temperature range from -20°C to 60°C, is analyzed. A multiphysics model was developed to simulate the trend of the experimental results. The results showed that the OCV curves generally maintain a fairly constant trend throughout the experiment, demonstrating the fact of thermal stability of the LFP type. Only in the case of full charge, 100%
SOC, is a slightly more variable behaviour noticeable, due to the presence of more active material. To bridge these differences, it would therefore be advisable to conduct tests on the batteries to obtain more certain and reliable data on entropic coefficient values to update the model.

Use of sewage sludges for CO2 removal
Papurello, Davide
Papurello, Davide
Sewage sludge from the Turin water purification system (SMAT; TO) is first anaerobically digested for biogas production and then used as filter material. Filter material for the purification of biogas produced by anaerobic digestion. The digested sludge must be appropriately treated. The case study was focused on the technical feasibility of the process. These samples were adopted for the removal of carbon dioxide from a biogas mixture. A sensitivity analysis was performed considering the main process parameters (temperature, residence time, activation agent, heating rate and activation flow rate). The sludge is characterised by its irregular shape and size, ranging from 1 mm to approximately 2 cm in equivalent diameter. Activation of the ground sludge was carried out in a tubular stainless steel reactor 57 cm long and 3.4 cm in outside diameter. A cylindrical electric furnace was adopted for the pyrogasification process, using N2, CO2 or air as the activating agent. A temperature control regulator, ranging from 200 to 600 °C, was adopted. These lower values compared to the literature are related to the coupling of SOFC discharges as possible agents for char production. Temperature and residence time are the most relevant parameters for char production with the pyrogasification process from sewage sludge. Temperature is the parameter that most influences the char production value. The biogas mixture (CH4/CO2=1.5) was considered. The untreated material shows an adsorption capacity of 4 mg/g, while the physically activated material shows a maximum value of about 102.5 mg/g. Future work will focus on the chemical activation of this sludge to investigate its gas-cleaning potential.

The energy crisis and the adaptation of the global energy structure promoted the development of renewable energies, in particular solar energy. With this work, attention is focused on solar devices, necessary to provide high-temperature heat for the reduction reaction of cerium oxide. Thermochemical processes for synthetic gas production and CO2 sequestering were investigated using a concentrated solar thermal system. This paper provides a useful forecasting model to make a realistic estimation of the system's producibility for the different periods of the year. This theoretical prediction of the most relevant process parameters makes it possible to simplify and facilitate the future development of an alternative and production technology. The findings in this paper could be used for the development of large-scale production systems.

Modeling Surface Reconstruction of Cu-based catalysts under Electrochemical CO2 Reduction Conditions

Copper-based materials are unique in catalyzing electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO2R) toward C2+ products, such as ethylene, ethanol, and n-propanol. However, C2+ product distribution depends heavily on the catalyst’s precursors and varies significantly over time as a result of surface reconstruction under operating conditions. Among the different types of catalysts, Cu foil produces mainly ethylene with oxygenates as side-products, while oxide-derived copper (OD-Cu) has the exclusive capacity of converting CO2 and CO to ethanol at high Faradaic efficiencies and low overpotentials. Similarly, Cu/Zn-based materials maximize ethanol selectivity to the detriment of CO and ethylene formation. Polarized copper sites due to residual oxygen, defects, grain boundaries, CO spillover from weak CO binding domains, and high electrochemical surface area have been deemed responsible for the high CO2 reduction activity and ethanol selectivity for OD-Cu and Cu/Zn catalysts. Thus, a rational design of improved catalysts requires a proper assessment of each contribution. Computational modeling allows to simulate reconstruction phenomena and to track surface composition depending on the bulk properties, enabling the characterization of the surface patterns which rule catalytic activity and selectivity. In this regard, we here report an ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) study on two classes of epitaxies, Cu2O/Cu and Cu2O/ZnO/Cu, to model OD-Cu and Cu/Zn-based catalysts.
In the first work, by simulating seven oxygen-depleted models derived from Cu2O(111) and Cu(111) pristine structures, we identified the main ensembles which control the catalytic performance of oxide-derived copper. Upon surface reconstruction and independently from the starting depletion geometry, copper can be classified into three main classes depending on its local coordination and charge: metallic Cu0, polarized Cuδ+, and oxidic Cu+, respectively coordinated to 0, 1, and 2 oxygens. These three species form 14 ensembles, such as 4- and 6-coordinated Cu adatoms, Cu3δ+O3, reconstructed (111), (110) and (100) crystalline domains, and near-surface oxygens. Together with the high atomic roughness, low coordinated Cu adatoms and polarized sites are responsible for stabilizing CO2 and therefore for improving CO2 reduction activity. Metastable oxygens and metallic fcc-(111) or (100)-like Cu facets promote the CO–CO dimerization step via a deprotonated glyoxylate configuration, whose formation is thermodynamically favored and presents a negligible kinetic barrier. Characterized by vibrational fingerprints attributable to CO2 reduction species on oxide-derived copper, this new intermediate could be the elusive molecule that reduces selectively to ethanol at low onset potentials. As a follow-up on the previous work, we recently modeled six Cu2O(111)/Zn(0001)/Cu(111) epitaxies with different bulk Zn compositions and carried out AIMD simulations at an applied electric field of –1.0 V vs RHE. We assessed the structural properties of the reconstructed surfaces, tracking surface composition, roughness, and local environment and comparing these results with experimental observations reported in a previous work by one of our groups.
Overall, this new theoretical set of modeling tools enables the assessment of complex structural rearrangements driven by surface polarization during CO2 reduction conditions and provides guidelines for new synthetic protocols toward catalysts selective to ethanol.

Thermal gradients - evaluations for the receiver of a disc solar concentrator
PAPURELLO DAVIDE
MARGHERITA PERRERO
Papurello, Davide
Margherita, Perrero
The receiver of a disc solar concentrator is not only stressed by the high solar radiation concentrated in a limited volume; it must also cope with thermal fluctuations. The resulting thermal gradient has a catastrophic effect on the mechanical characteristics of the receiver. As the thermal gradient increases, the thermal stress on the selected materials increases. If the creep limit is exceeded, the material begins to deform plastically to the point of fracture. The outputs of the problem are the spatial trend of the temperature at the end of the transient and the temporal trend of the most
stressed section, which turns out to be the output section. In addition, the thermal stress induced by the temperature gradient was evaluated at the end of the transient, which turns out to be the most extreme working condition. The following materials were studied: Alloy 625, Alloy 800H, Haynes
230, Inconel 740H, Alloy 316H. The best material is Inconel 740H, which has a high yield strength and the lowest ΔT of all the materials analyzed. It is also the only one that could withstand the induced thermal shock even under extreme working conditions.

Metabolic diversity in cell populations: probability densities over the flux polytope
De Martino, Andrea
Rivas Astroza, Marcelo
De Martino, Andrea
Rivas Astroza, Marcelo
Even in clonal populations, cells appear to be strongly heterogeneous in terms of, e.g., protein levels, RNA levels, sizes at birth or division, interdivision times and elongation rates. Part of this variability is likely due to the inherent stochasticity of gene expression at the level of single cells. It is however known that heterogeneous populations may possess an evolutionary advantage, for instance in variable environments or under stress. Despite appearing to be at odds with the idea of optimality presented in the previous chapters, metabolic diversity can be described and modeled within the constraint-based framework introduced in the previous chapters. Specifically, a statistical representation of heterogeneous populations can be obtained by defining suitable probability distributions on the flux polytope. This chapter addresses
• the different sources of variation that affect microbial metabolism along with the mechanisms that may favor higher variability,
• the methods devised to represent heterogeneous microbial populations within the framework of constraint- based models, and
• how these approaches connect to the optimality scenario presented in the previous chapters.

Radical, Disruptive, Discontinuous and Breakthrough Innovation: More or the same?

The scholarship on innovation has stressed the importance of distinguishing ‘exceptional’
innovation from ‘run-of-the-mill’ innovation in both conceptual and empirical terms. Over recent
decades, various labels have been coined to denote the exceptional nature of innovation. At the
same time, research on this topic has been critiqued for its ambiguity in accurately defining and
delineating the phenomena under study and, consequently, putting in jeopardy the development of
a cumulative body of understanding. We revisit this concern by systematically reviewing three
decades of research advanced under the labels of radical, disruptive, breakthrough and
discontinuous innovation. We combine two bibliometric techniques – bibliographic coupling and
co-citation analysis – to (i) explore the theoretical foundations of these labels and (ii) delineate the
thematic orientation of the scholarship pursued under these labels. Our results reveal a dense and
growing network of publications that build, in large measure, on the same scientific foundations.
In terms of thematic orientation, five overlapping clusters are present, with specific labels scattered
across the thematic landscape. These findings suggest that the different labels do not denote clearly
distinct bodies of academic scholarship. A subsequent content analysis of the definitions advanced
in the most cited papers reveals two discrete underlying dimensions: novelty and impact. Yet, none
of the labels characterize innovations across these two dimensions with any consistency. Although
this ‘lack of rigor’ would seem to yield no detrimental effects in terms of growth (of scholarship),
we argue that conflating novelty and impact can result in ambiguous results. We conclude,
therefore, that consistency in the use (and operationalization) of both dimensions would benefit our
(cumulative) understanding of the (complex) phenomena involved.

Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) is a promising technology to reduce CO2 atmospheric concentrations by simultaneously storing renewable energy and generating high added-value products.1 Among the many possible reaction products, the generation of syngas, i.e. a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, is particularly considered as it requires low energetic consumption, yet this product ensures a broad market share.2 Such process usually occurs on weak CO binding catalysts, such as Au and Ag,3 and it can be particularly enhanced using ionic liquids (IL) as co-catalysts in the electrolyte.4,5 Earlier computational studies indicate that ionic liquids can either stabilize the CO2 adsorbate via electric interaction 6 or poison the electrocatalytic surface,7 thus blocking CO2 reduction and enhancing water reduction. In our group, we recently carried out a systematic assessment of the role of different EMIM+/BMIM+-based ionic liquids for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 on silver electrodes. Such study resulted in a joint experimental/modeling work,8 where some of us demonstrated that IL anions tune the ratio between the concentration of cations (EMIM+ or BMIM+) and the carbene species (EMIM:/BMIM:) in the electrolyte. Such effect can be rationalized by using few thermodynamic descriptors, such as the formation energy of EMIM:/BMIM: species, their adsorption energy, and their ability to trap CO2 in solution. Consequently, the ratio of cations and carbenes rules the CO2 capture and electrochemical conversion properties of imidazolium based ILs.
Herein, we carried out a follow up of the previous study,8 generalizing the previously suggested descriptors to provide predictive guidelines for experimental synthesis. Screening among different IL, we confirmed that the formation energy of EMIM:/BMIM: species is the primary driving force for enhancing water reduction. In fact, such carbenes either increase the local availability of protons to sustain hydrogen evolution (HER) or block the surface, hindering adsorption of CO2 at the surface and thus allowing only HER to occur. Such surface blocking effect was further confirmed by in-house measurements of electrochemically active surface areas (ECSA) in presence of different IL. In addition to surface poisoning, EMIM:/BMIM: can also trap CO2 in solution, further hindering CO2 reduction. Among the considered anions, acetate anion determines the lowest energy for EMIM+/BMIM+ deprotonation, consequently leading to high H2 partial current densities and low ECSA values. Instead, triflate anion prevents the formation of carbenes and thus hinders any surface poisoning effect, enabling Faradaic efficiency toward CO behind 90%.
Overall, by generalizing the insights from the previous work,8 we here provide guidelines to identify the best ionic liquids out of simple thermodynamic properties. By extrapolating our results to IL not yet tested, it is possible to predict HER and CO2R activities on silver, thus enabling a direct pathway for the experimental design of IL for CO2R.

Algebraic Geometry has provided tools to study and solve several physical systems, and, conversely, the study of the famous “KP” PDE, has led to spectacular results in Algebraic Geometry.
In this paper we provide several example to show how such a pèhilosphy can be concretely implemented. In particular an exact solution of the Euler Rigid Body system is supplied.
