The continuous development of 3D surveying and modelling techniques through increasingly performing tools and applications underlines the added value given by these methods in urban and architectural surveying. In the suggested case the attention is particularly turned towards applications useful for the planned maintenance of cultural heritage; if such tools and methods have great relevance in the interpretative phase and "physical" knowledge, they can also provide a decisive contribution to the completion of information base (on platforms based on the interoperability of databases) necessary for a 360-degree maintenance planning of the architectural heritage. An international three-year research project (Interreg Italy-Switzerland "MAIN.10.ANCE") is in a start-up phase and the Politecnico di Torino is a partner of this project. The object of the study is a UNESCO listed Heritage: the Sacri Monti of North-Western Italy and Canton Ticino.
