The occupant has great influence on the building energy consumption and several studies analysed its deviation in different households; anyway, the extent of such deviation is seldom quantified, as well as the effect of the variation of the user behaviour after the building retrofit. Within this research context, the present work introduces a preliminary analysis to investigate the “rebound effect” in Italian retrofitted residential buildings. To this purpose, an occupancy survey based on a detailed questionnaire was carried out in three apartment blocks located in Torino (Italy) and recently refurbished, taken as a pilot case. The questions submitted to households mainly focus on the relation between the user and the dwelling, but also concern aspects influencing occupant behaviour indirectly, such as income, education level, employment. On the basis of the survey results, a methodology to build occupancy patterns and reference users is proposed. The energy need for space heating of the apartment blocks was then assessed by means of a detailed dynamic calculation model, considering different reference users, before and after the building energy retrofit. The results confirm the high variability of the energy demand under different occupant habits (about 30%). The energy savings consequent to building retrofitting amount to about 58%, with-out appreciable differences among users. As concerns the change of the behaviour after the building refurbishment, the survey results do not point out an absolute tendency and are not representative at the moment.
