Challenging the lettered city. Antagonist forms of urbanism in Latin America

Challenging the Lettered City is an attempt to the codification of a discourse among some Latin America urban design and planning design experimentations of the 2000’s, whose disciplinary ties forged alliances with emergent structures of urban governance and whose professional means and ends implicitly aligned with postcolonial urban narratives. By excavating the asymmetries between the ‘Lettered’ and the ‘Unlettered’ city, it is possible to reveal the central role that architecture takes on as both practice embedded in and discursive cypher for the unfolding of new power structures.Challenging the Lettered City è un tentativo di codificazione di un discorso attorno alcune sperimentazioni di progetto e pianificazione urbanistica in America Latina negli anni 2000 in cui è possibile cogliere conflitti e alleanze con alcune narrazioni urbane postcoloniali. Indagando sulle asimmetrie tra la città "letterata" e "illetterata", è possibile rivelare il ruolo centrale che l'architettura assume come sia pratica che come elemento discorsivo nella definizione di nuove strutture di potere.
