We have just entered a time of big challenges and transformations - the so-called Shift Age (Houle, 2011) - where we are asked to reshape most of our common behaviours and habits in the direction of sustainability. The ecological emergency demands a development of sustainable and resilient communities. To live in armony with ecosystems we have to re-organize structures, flows and relations within the human systems. It's necessary a change of paradigm: from an approach based on the competition and the logic of continuous growth to a systemic vision, based on collaboration, awareness and the rediscovery of qualitative values. This essay regards the relationship between awareness and design education in the last century. It investigates the necessity to move from a teacher-centric learning to a modern critical pedagogical system where students engage in a positive dialogue with professors and even self-evaluate the progress of their own skills. This is a paradigmatic shift: from a linear teaching model to a systemic learning one. Rethinking design education in a systemic view involves also a reconsideration of the hierarchical relationship between teachers and students, the programs delivered at the university and the way of teaching. This essay also provides some ideas to develop efficient programs to educate a new eco-competent generation of designers.
