The studies on the diffusion of distributed energy resources (DER) in distribution networks are based on the evolution in time of the active and reactive power patterns of loads and generations at each node. In some time periods these loads and generations could lead to critical situations for the network operation. The losses allocated to the distribution network nodes are a useful indicator to identify where and how it can be appropriate to install new generation or load, with the purpose of reducing the total network losses. This paper follows a different way to exploit the information given by the losses allocated to each node, in the new prospect of building critical cases for the DER integration. The formulation of the loss allocation method is reported in the paper in a systematic way, to provide educational information. Then, specific applications are shown to construct cases representative of scenarios with high DER penetration.
