In this paper, a substructuring approach is developed for coupling two generic linear structures. It is demonstrated that, starting from the classical Craig-Bampton method, the size of the reduced order model of each substructure can be further reduced by using the so called Characteristic Constraint Modes (CCMs), describing the characteristic motion of the substructure interfaces. Moreover, when two substructures have to be coupled, a suitable common basis of CCMs can be defined, making their coupling possible. The assembly of the substructures is enabled by exploiting the shape functions of the interface elements. The proposed method is particularly advantageous when the meshes at the interfaces are non-conforming.
