The most astonishing data while observing what happened at a global scale within the last fifty years is the increase of population, urbanisation and housing. The varied reasons of the object’s social construction seem to prevail over the utility of the reduction and no knowledge is able to claim an exclusive competence on housing. Nevertheless the dynamics of the recent huge Asian residential expansions seem to point out towards modernization processes which are not so different, from many aspects, from the processes around which the European and American literature has been questioning for long, at the beginning of modernity. It is possible to find a dichotomy between the few general histories, which have an evolutionary character and micro-stories, which seem to reproduce the experience of the house. A recent origin of the housing’s matter seems to emerge around the middle of the XIX century, to which a long silence is juxtaposed: the beginning of the housing modernity is separated from the long time history of house and also from the beginning of the biopolitical function of the nations, after the half of XVII century. Within the XVIII century literature, and within the following studies, a general term synthesizing the whole housing condition is very rare. The importance of the act overcomes the material object and house becomes a problem just when is interpretated as a class infrastructure, a tool active on a part of the population. The house at this point reaches the surface of the speech and seems to receive its own primary character of the use of the adjective: for workers, popular, economic, minimum, rational, modern. It is a matter of contrasting the amnesia of the genesis going with the housing practices with the effect of making them without problems and to return to evaluate the elements wich have historically made possible the statement of the notion and the measures of “house”, in order then to try to survey the actuality of the contexts, characters, images and margins of autonomy in comparison to the markets.

Abstract

The most astonishing data while observing what happened at a global scale within the last fifty years is the increase of population, urbanisation and housing. If compared to this, a common ground literature about housing, no either a list of format and types and not even a treatment such as theory of the housing’ elements, doesn’t seem to exist. The study of texts makes some aspects emerge: first a superimposition among the literature on housing and the project’s principles.
