A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was carried out for the evaluation of environmental effects associated to the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in the production and laying of road pavement base and foundation courses. The specific case study subjected to analysis was that of a major Italian motorway which underwent significant pavement rehabilitation on a section of 16 km. Based on the data retrieved from design and construction records, a LCA model was developed for the calculation of selected environmental indicators, which were referred to a pavement unit length. By comparing results obtained for two different pavement cross-sections, it was found that cold recycling of RAP can lead to a remarkable reduction of total environmental impact (-42% of energy consumption and -37% of greenhouse gas emissions).
