This work presents the results of a research aimed to study the AD potential of wastes (lees and pomace) coming from wine production in Italy. The considered substrates underwent a physic-chemical characterization, by means of the determination of Total and Volatile Solids (TS and VS), elemental composition and pH. The gathered results allowed the estimation of theoretical biogas and methane production values which were in agreement with a technical and economic feasibility of the AD process: 0.73 Nm3 biogas/kgSV and 0.79 Nm3 biogas/kgSV, were respectively calculated for pomace and lees. Some tests were then performed in mesophile conditions at laboratory scale and at pilot scale. Laboratory tests involved a mixture of lees and pomace, designed to achieve a optimum C/N ratio, 6L reactors, 3% TS content and a fed-batch operating mode, giving back a biogas production equal to 0.89 Nm3/kgSV, with an average methane content of 62%-vv, against a calculated value equal to 0.76 Nm3/kgSV. Pilot scale AD tests, concerning only lees, were performed in a 300L reactor fed in a semi-continuous mode with the substrate diluted until the TS content was equal to 4% (average); biogas yield of 1.10 Nm3/kgSV, and a methane yield of 0.62 Nm3/kgSV were gathered. Although hydrogen sulfide, due to the generation of sulfites during wine production, was a critical issue in biogas, its value has never exceeded 300 ppm, and methane production was not inhibited. The results of the performed tests, despite of the different scale of the reactors, exhibited a good consistency and confirmed AD as a feasible technical solution for the valorization of wine wastes.
