The wear of tools and mechanical parts is an important issue in full face mechanized tunneling since the maintenance and tools replacement can be critical economic factors that must be considered and correctly evaluated, already at the design stage, for the development of a correct design and job site management. With the aim of assessing the influence of the soil conditioning sets on tool wear, a specific test procedure has been designed, developed and tested in the “Tunnelling and Underground Space Center and Laboratory” of Politecnico di Torino, with the economic support of UTT Mapei S.p.A. The design of the laboratory device and the preliminary results of tests performed on different soils are presented and discussed.

Abstract
