Abstract

When dealing with the settlement transformations in the Aosta Valley territory, with a particular reference to the Grand Scale topic, one cannot disregard the political and identity issues that have characterised the administrative and cultural specificities of the Region. A specific model of territorial management and transformation has spread in the Aosta Valley. According to this model, which is strongly built around regional autonomy, the fine-tuning of territorial policies is closely related to the landscape vision elaborated by the local society. When faced with ”high lands”, the Grand Scale project must necessarily come to grips with some great contradictions, such as the conflict between innovation and conservation, between local habits and global dynamics, between quality of physical projects and robustness of collective identities, which are also common to other contexts, where modernisation processes intertwine with significant bedding of environmental and cultural values.
