An easy and low-cost slurry method to produce oxidation protective multilayer coatings for carbon-carbon composites (C/C) is reported. The multilayer coatings are made of three layers: a (β–SiC first layer on the C/C surface; a composite made of boron carbide or molybdenum disilicide particles in a barium aluminum boron silicate glass matrix (second layer) and a third (outer) layer obtained by reaction of yttrium oxide particles in the same glass matrix. Thermal cycling oxidation tests of the multilayer coated C/C up to 1300°C in air did not show any appreciable weight loss.
