BIM -Building Information Modeling- is beginning to change the approach to design, construction and facility management: we want to introduce these new activities and tools at Politecnico di Torino. We will describe some case studies of projects in which BIM and interoperability have played a significant role. All case studies are about Politecnico projects: they are analyzed through architectural, structural and economic aspects. We used parametric software for architectural design and IAI − International Alliance for Interoperability − Standards for importing and exporting data. We started analyzing basic structures to improve the IFC - Industry Foundation Classes – standard operating procedure for importing and exporting the structural elements, while for economic and energetic aspects we used open file formats and specialized applications to operate on the information created with BIM. We normally use the BIM model as the integrated design model where all various specializations can interact through interoperability.
