A comparison is made between the characteristics of the layers formed by means of ion-nitrocarburizing and ion-nitriding treatments on a superduplex stainless steel and on an austenitic stainless steel, usually used in marine environments. The corrosion resistance of the layers has been evaluated by means of weight loss measurements in seawater, correlating the results with an electrochemical characterization performed by means of polarization curves and polarization resistance measurements. The behavior of the layers is explained in the light of their morphology, which was studied by microscopic and X ray techniques.

Abstract

A comparison is made between the characteristics of the layers formed by means of ion-nitrocarburizing and ion-nitriding treatments on a superduplex stainless steel and on an austenitic stainless steel, usually used in marine environments. The corrosion resistance of the layers has been evaluated by means of weight loss measurements in seawater, correlating the results with an electrochemical characterization performed by means of polarization curves and polarization resistance measurements. The behavior of the layers is explained in the light of their morphology, which was studied by microscopic and X ray techniques.
