The trampoline system for the ski jump event built in Pragelato for the 20th Winter Olympic Games held in Turin in 2006 consist of two Olympic trampolines and three teaching units. The Olympic trampolines consist of launch slopes in the form of steel platforms and landing zones on the side of the mountain. The complex blends into the landscape particularly well, as a result of the in-depth location studies carried out during the planning stages. The structure of the launch slope platforms contributes to this result with its rigid torsion beams which exploit the height of the snow casing to create a dynamic, lightweight profile. One of the original features of the Pragelato Olympic platforms is the way in which the profile is fully adjustable in the vertical direction. This has been achieved by means of jacks and screw devices, which made it possible to overcome the problems linked to the differential yield of the foundations and the tracing and construction tolerances. The trampolines are designed for winter and summer use, with automatic snow machinery, with conveyor surfaces based on special ceramics on the slopes and synthetic fibres in the landing zones, which are continuously sprinkled with water. The complex includes all the accessories – heating and start areas, towers for the judges, and so on – and a multipurpose service building, to ensure that the use of the structure will continue to be economically sustainable after the Olympics. During construction, the most complex problems were caused by the difficult layout of the land on the site and the need to adhere to a tight deadline, in spite of the adverse weather conditions.
